Lostly (Andre Frauenstein) has been on the radar for over ten years now, but 2018 the artist from Köln, Germany and long-time analogue synth enthusiast has taken things to the next level with his first artist album. Signed to Mark Sherry’s Outburst label which is a perfect home for the Lostly sound.
‘Since’ opens the album with melodic beautiful melodies mixed with acid 303 basslines, it’s a difficult thing to have those two styles mix together but Lostly pulls it off very well in this album opener.
The acid influence continues into the ‘The Art Of Acid’, the clue was in the title you could say. Great job on the pads on this, the whole mix is nicely crafted, perfect vox choice as well.
‘Nightwalker’ has sensational vocals from Emma Gillespie, they complement the track perfectly and are not remotely cheesy at all, which is a breath of fresh air these days. So far this is the standout track of the album. Emma returns, along with Igor Nembrini on the track ‘Relentless’ which deliveres the goods as well.
I really enjoyed the track ‘Nothing Left’, it has a very unique sound, something I would definitely put in my sets, ‘Let Us Never Forget’ is equally as intriguing, these tracks remind me of how trance was sounding about 5-8 years ago, yet with Lostly’s own take on it. ‘Causeway’ is definitely a nod to the Marco V tech-trance style of 2002-2004 and it does a fantastic job at it!
‘Dance With The Devil’ has a menacing vocal that I could just see mainstage at a huge festival, dark and a hint of psy to it, originally released in 2016 but sounds amazing still today.
Finishing off the album is ‘One Last Look’, a track that wouldn’t look out of place on a Gouryella album, very nicely crafted but yet still that dark Lostly persuasion, great last track and album.
The only thing I don’t like about this album is the title ‘Outburst presents Spotlight: Lostly’. That would be fine for a compilation mix album series, but for an artist album? No. The focus should be entirely on Lostly and he should have been able to give the album a title of his choosing, I’d be amazed if this was Lostly’s idea to put the the labels name in the title. For me I think this is selfish of Outburst to try to dominate the album title for the sake of building their own album brand off the back of Lostly’s work here. This takes nothing away from the music, but for me takes away from the individuality of the fact that Lostly just produced an artist album, which should be all the attention we need.
